AM Workshops and PM Workshops
Half-day, weeklong workshops occur each week from July 11-August 5
The AM Session will run from 9:30am- 12:00pm
The PM Session will run from 1:00-3:30pm

We will offer different workshop experiences each week for ages 5-18 years old.

There’s something for everyone!

“Stay All Day” Lunch Program
If your young artist wants to stay all day, we will be hosting lunch break between the AM and PM sessions. Bring your own lunch and enjoy art and games in the park with one of our teaching artists.  A group leader will sign out the students from their AM workshop, eat lunch and play, then sign them into PM workshops.

Tuition for each individual Workshop with 15% savings is $150 $128 for members and $165 $140 for nonmembers if completed and payment is received by May 18th. There is an additional lab fee of $25.  Tuition Assistance is available on a first come, first serve, pay what you can basis.  The more folks contribute, the more we can give out.  For Tuition Assistance; Ask at the front desk or Linda at lfernandez@fleisher.org or 215-922-3456 ext. 348.

5-7 years old

You are what you Eat: Adventures in Food Sculpture!
Faculty:  Darla Jackson
Working with clay, students will learn how to use pinch, slab and coil techniques to create different types of food! Ranging from farm fresh to far away, this culinary tour in clay will have you asking for seconds!

“Paint, Splash and Doodle”
Faculty:  Sam McConnell
Working with various painting and drawing materials, young artists will use elements of art, such as, line, shape, color, and texture to create their own artwork. 

“Book Making”
Faculty: Kristen Rashid
Young artists will explore storytelling through words, images and bookmaking. Students will become author, illustrator, and bookbinder for their own original book. This workshop is open to all skill levels for students who are interested in developing storytelling and bookmaking skills.

“Toys, Toys, Toys”
Faculty: Nikki Virbitsky
 Play, draw, and make your own toy!  Repurpose broken toys into mini toy sculptures, make actions figures or figurines, and paint and draw from toy still life.  This workshop will crash together playing and art-making!

“Panting and Drawing”
Faculty:  Sam McConnell
Young People develop creative thinking processes while exploring a variety of drawing and painting techniques. Formal elements of color and design are introduced at age-appropriate levels.

“Critter Sculpture”
Quincy Carpenter
From pinch pot to monsters to dinosaurs to elephants; see how easily you can turn simple pinch pots into fun and friendly sculptures.    

“Wonderlands”
Jillian Kessleman
Students will create their own Wonderlands! We will explore a variety of mixed media and get inspired by other artists & the natural world around us. Have fun drawing and painting from your imagination!

“Dragon Dwellings”
Kathryn Sclavi
Students will hear legends about dragons, and look at some artistic interpretations of dragons over time.  Then, each student will create a detailed drawing of an imaginary dragon with special powers using pencil, colored pencil, watercolor, and ink. 
After creating the dragon, students will create a 3D magical dragon “habitat” to place their drawn dragon inside. Students will use both their imagination and observational drawing skills to render a dragon, and learn 3D construction and painting skills to create a magical habitat.

7-9 years old

“Collections!”
Faculty:  Jessica Boyko
In this workshop, young people will transform their collections into artwork.  From both existing and new collections, young people will create sculptural exhibition pieces that combine their own collection of objects together into one.  New collections will challenge the young artists to be inspired by color, shape and elements of art and design.  No matter what your collection is, bring it in and work from your own inspiration and extend these objects and preserve it for a lifetime.  Students will spend the week transforming their collection into display, as well as working on a new one based on color, shape and other elements of art and design.

8-10 years old

“Critter Softies”:  
Faculty Marie Elcin
Make the creatures of your imagination come to life as your own soft sculpture creations! Children will design and create a variety of sewn and stuffed toys out of felt and fabric, and will be introduced to sewing by hand and machine with the help of their teacher.

“Comic Books”
Faculty: Lisa Berry
Superheroes, pirates, robots, far off places and daring adventures…anything can happen in the pages of a comic book!  In this class, we’ll explore the process of making comic books and graphic novels.  We’ll work on character sketching, writing stories and dialogue, laying out pages and of course, creating cool cover designs.  Students are encouraged to bring drawings, ideas, and examples of their favorite comics to the first class.

“Sculpture”
Faculty: TBD
Three-dimensional work allows young artists to expand their understanding of artistic concepts and techniques primarily focused work with clay construction. Young people will learn coil construction, hand building, relief and glazing.

“Modern Dance”
Faculty:  Audrey Monte
This class is an intro to modern dance.  Modern dance encourages dancers to use their emotions and moods to design their own steps and routines. It is not unusual for modern dancers to invent new steps for their routines, instead of following a structured code of technique, as in ballet.  Therefore, students will learn basic modern dance steps and combinations as well as create their own steps.  The final result will be a short dance to music incorporating all the steps learned and created.  

“Mosaic and Edibles”
Faculty: Natasha Mel-Taylor
In this course students will learn several ways to mosaic. In the grand tradition of Philadelphia and Isaiah Zagar we will use found objects and unlikely materials to create beautiful and eclectic mosaics on tiles and three-dimensional objects. In this workshop we will make individual sculptures and collaborate on an edible mosaic to share.  

“Photography- The Great Photo Adventure”
Faculty:  Andrea Cipriani Mecchi
Learn to take great photos!  You don’t need a fancy camera to capture a great image.  This workshop will be taught by a local pro whose gift is getting the right angle at the right time.  Using simple point and shoot cameras (must bring your own), oriphone, young photographers will learn HOW to take a great picture.  Students will learn about composition, timing, light and vantage points while exploring Fleisher and the surrounding areas.  

“Magician among Us”
Faculty: Tad Sare
Get back to the basics of magic with this class that explores a variety of optical illusions.
Create old school toys guaranteed to amaze your friends and family with visual trickery.
Projects include 3-way paintings, phenakistoscopes, kaleidoscopes, magic lanterns, and
moving slides.

“Flying High, Kite Making”
Faculty: Jessica Boyko
Combine art and physics. Learn how to make a kite that is not only a piece of art but that will also FLY.  Young artists will make individual projects as well as work together to make large kite installations that will fly throughout the Fleisher building.

“Clay World”
Faculty: TBD
Working with clay, students will enjoy learning how to use pinch, slab and coil techniques to build both containers and creatures.  

“Fiber Arts”
Faculty:  Nikki Virbitsky
Use your hands to create finger puppets, stuffed animals, yarn paintings and much more.  Students will create projects that mix fiber and fabric into fun projects in this hands on workshop.

“Drawing and Painting”
Faculty:  Elaine Erne
Experiment with drawing and painting materials, explore a variety of 2D art genres and styles, and learn to think and see like an artist! “Terrariums: Gardens Under Glass”
Faculty:  Jared Gruenwald
This workshop is an exploration into the wonderful world of terrariums!  This workshop will spark your creativity in new ways as you design a one-of-a-kind habitat for plants.  The terrariums created will self sustaining environments where plants live in their own space, independent of outside conditions. Build your favorite plants a fun new year round home with a garden under glass. Students will choose from a wide variety of plants and glass vessels to create their gardens.  We will discuss individual plant care to ensure your terrariums last for years and years. 

“Darkroom Experimental Studio” 
Faculty:  Elyse Derosia
What are photograms, cyanotypes, pinhole cameras, and liquid light? Find out in the Darkroom Experimental Studio where students will experiment with exposure, light and traditional film development.  Explore many ways to make photographs without a traditional camera. Some of these processes are over 1,000 years old!

“Drawing and Painting”
Faculty: PT Schwab
Experiment with drawing and painting materials, explore a variety of 2D art genres and styles, and learn to think and see like an artist! Students will be introduced to the elements and principles of art and design and will take inspiration for projects from contemporary and historical art examples.Students will increase their technical skills in drawing and painting, including tone, shading, perspective, and color mixing. 

“Pixilation Animation”
Faculty:  Tad Sare 
Have you ever wanted to float around on air or turn yourself into a human skateboard?
Make the impossible possible by using your own body to become a living stop motion
puppet. Collaborate with others to make your imagination come alive frame by frame
through this animation technique.

“Digital Street Photography”
Faculty:  Elyse Derosia
Students will take their cameras to the streets of Philadelphia's colorful Italian Market, the lively South Street area, and the famous Magic Gardens and explore what the "decisive moment" means for them! Students will develop their photographic eye, make images that tell stories while capturing their own point of view, and get to know their cameras better. Students will learn basic Photoshop ® editing and manipulation of images and will finish class with a portfolio of five prints. Students must provide their own digital camera (basic point and shoot is fine).

“Paper Bag Batik”
Faculty:  Kathryn Sclavi
In this project, students will create their own paper “cloth” using wrinkled paper bags, crayons, and tempera.  Paper Bag Batik is a really fun process that involves using bright colors, paint, and wrinkling paper enough so that it resembles real Batik (a process of putting wax and dye on fabric to create designs - popular in some African countries, and Southeast Asian countries).  Students will use the Paper Bag Batik material to construct and a pair of sculptural shoes.     

“Sculpture, Ceramics”

“Digital Drawing and Collage (Photoshop)”
Faculty:  Rocky Kev
Design video game or movie box cover and make it your own! In Digital Drawing and Collage, students will develop an eye for design, as they customize their own favorite products. We'll learn how to make posters, stickers, and CD/DVD jackets - all while exercising our Photoshop muscles!

“Abstract to Observation, painting”
Faculty:  Quincy Carpenter
Free up your drawing style by working in tones and shades.  Learn to create volumetric forms and compositions.  Develop expressive and personal style through painting to music, working abstractly as well as from observation. Create final compositions with both watercolor and acrylic paint, either drawing from still life or your imagination. 

“Fiber Arts”
Faculty:  Nikki Virbitsky
In this workshop, children will be introduced to a variety of fiber arts techniques for making projects based in fiber in both 2D and 3D. Students will explore different fiber media which may include felting, stitching, weaving, printing on fabric, textile design, tapestries, and even toy-making. Projects will be inspired by both contemporary fiber artists and traditional textile traditions from around the world. All artistic levels welcome.

“Silkscreen”

“Mural painting”

Make your mark at Fleisher in a BIG way! Students will learn the steps and traditions of mural painting with consideration for current trends in street art. We will design and paint a brand new mural in the Fleisher parking lot for all to see. Come ready to paint and spend some time outdoors.

“Guerilla Filmmaking for Teens”  
Faculty: Tad Sare
No school, no job, no money…time to make a movie. Guerilla filmmaking requires an
Improvisational attitude to digital video where you can take advantage of simple props
and real locations ready and available to you. Try your hand at writing, acting in, filming,
and editing your own low budget cinematic sequence.

“Drawing 101”
Faculty:  Dave Krevolin
Young artists will learn basic elements of art and design through 2 dimensional projects.  Students will learn about composition, perspective, value, tone, and shading. Students will take inspiration for projects from contemporary and historical art examples.  This workshop is open to all skill levels for students who are interested in developing or enhancing their technique and drawing skills.   (great for portfolio building)

“Painting 101”  
Faculty:  Tad Sare
So much to do, so little time! Hurry up and enjoy the end of your summer vacation by mastering the basics of oil painting! Students will produce unique and expressive portraits and still life in studio as well as take advantage of Fleisher's charming neighborhood by painting outdoors. Acquire skills such as color theory, color mixing, and various techniques of paint application. Considerable drawing experience recommended. (great for portfolio building)

“Digital Drawing and Collage”
Faculty: Rocky Kev
"There's an App for that." Yeah, but you can do it better in Photoshop! In Digital Drawing and Collage, we will be learning all the cool ways the professionals use Photoshop to make their work POP! Remove blemishes, add a filter, change their clothes - the possibilities are endless! No more bad picture days for you!

Black and White Darkroom Photography
Faculty:  Elyse Derosia
In this class students will learn how to use their manual SLR film cameras, how to develop their own black-and-white film, and how to print images in the darkroom. Students will also become familiar with the work of many historic and contemporary photographers and be led in a group critique of their own work.

Learn the basics of modeling three-dimensional animal forms, beginning with bones, skulls, and taxidermy and moving on to live animals. Each piece will be sculpted in clay. No prior experience necessary.
