Children's Summer Workshops:
Week 4: July 29 - August 2

AM Workshops and PM Workshops
Half-day, weeklong workshops occur each week of our four week session from July 11-August 5, from 9:30am- 12:00pm for the AM session and 1:00-3:30 for the PM session. We have different workshop experiences for ages 5-18 years old. There's something for everyone!

"Stay All Day" Lunch Program
If your young artist wants to stay all day, we will be hosting lunch break between the AM and PM sessions. Bring your own lunch and enjoy art and games in the park with one of our teaching artists. A group leader will sign out the students from their AM workshop, eat lunch and play, then sign them into PM workshops.

In this course, students will learn mosaic techniques. In the grand tradition of Philadelphia and Isaiah Zagar (the Magic Gardens!), we will use found objects and unlikely materials to create beautiful and eclectic mosaics on tiles and three-dimensional objects.

Learn to create volumetric forms and compositions. Develop expressive and personal style and your technique through painting to music, working abstractly as well as from observation. Learn more about color and how it works together. Create final compositions with both watercolor and acrylic paint, either drawing from still life.

During this week-long workshop, children will explore the art of three-dimensional art forms using a different type of building medium each day. We will create out own air-dry clay, learn basic hand building techniques, work with paper, natural and recycled materials, wood and more! Projects include pinch pot monsters, wacky birds, nature sculpture and recycled shadow box inventions.

Come make pots with us! This pottery course introduces the technique and legacy of traditional Nigerian and Ghanaian pottery making. We will discuss the history of Nigerian pottery techniques and explore Nigerian art and culture. We will also examine the history and importance of pottery and the vessel in other cultures. No prior experience is required.

This workshop is an exploration into the wonderful world of terrariums! Build your favorite plants a fun new year round home with a garden under glass! This workshop will spark your creativity in new ways as you design a one-of-a-kind habitat for plants, creating self-sustaining environments for plants to live in their own space, independent of outside conditions. Students will choose from a wide variety of plants and glass vessels to create their gardens. We will discuss individual plant care to ensure your terrariums last for years and years.

Build your own mini circus like Philadelphia born artist Alexander Calder! Using simple objects such as wire, fabric, paint, glitter, glue and wood, Calder transformed a simple tabletop into a magical world full of balloon artist monkey’s bubble blowing lions, daredevil acrobats and more. Inspired by Calder, we will build our own mini moving circus sculptures. Each day will lead us on a new adventure, learn and use new materials, new character or set and the end of the course we will put all the pieces together. At the end of the course we will transform the room into a circus big top and invite one and all to watch our wonders in action!

PM Clay Sculpture for ages 8 - 10 [awsu-4b-39] | Ms. Jill Allen

Create colorful containers, realistic "Pop Art" sculptures and more in this "clay-z" class! Students will learn how to build with clay using pinch, slab and coil techniques while creating unique vessels and sculptures. Pieces will be decorated with colorful slips and glazes. We will end the week with a Clay Olympics!

PM Digital Street Photography for ages 14 - 18 [cwsu-4b-34] | Ms. Elyse Derosia

Students will take their cameras to the streets of Philadelphia's colorful Italian Market, the lively South Street area, exciting China Town and the famous Magic Gardens and explore what the "decisive moment" means for them! Students will develop their photographic eye, and make images that tell stories while capturing their own point of view. Students will learn basic Photoshop editing and manipulation of images and will finish class with a portfolio of five prints. Students must provide their own digital camera.

PM Painting and Drawing - Imagination and Observation for ages 11 - 13 [cwsu-4b-33] | Mr. Manny Gonzalez

Students will learn a variety of painting and drawing skills and techniques each day. Using a large sketch book/ illustration book as the foundation, students will explore and practice what they learn. Ideas will be generated from the imagination and by aspects of their lives as they chronicle dreams, thoughts, imaginary tales, and daily encounters using various media (paint, collage, ink, paint pens, etc.).
