Dear Fleisher, 4 x 6 Inches of Art:
2008 edition

SUNDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2008 · 4:00 – 7:00 p.m.

The Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial presents the third biennial invitational exhibition and sale of original art to benefit Fleisher's education and exhibition programs. Dear Fleisher 2008 features original art in postcard size (4 x 6 inches) in a range of media. In keeping with Fleisher’s mission of access for all, each piece is priced at $50.00 and sold on a first-come, first-served basis — with no presales. Each postcard is signed on the back, keeping the artist's identity a surprise until after the sale and allowing viewers the pleasure of focusing on the strength of the work itself.

The first installments of Dear Fleisher in 2004 and 2006 collectively featured over 12,000 works by 507 artists and raised over $60,000 for Fleisher’s programs.

A $5 contribution at the door is suggested. Refreshments will be served and a cash bar will be open.

A special Preview Party will take place on Saturday, October 4, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Attendees will have the opportunity to get a sneak peek — but not purchase — the artwork on display. However, ten 4 x 6-inch pieces created especially for the Preview Party by an honorary artist committee will be raffled during the evening. The honorary artists committee includes Lanny Bergner, Astrid Bowlby, Moe Brooker, Paul DuSold, Alex Kanevsky, Virgil Marti, Sarah McEneany, Elizabeth Osborne, Ron Rumford, and Zöe Strauss.

Tickets for the preview party are $50 a person, and include one complimentary raffle ticket. Additional raffle tickets can be purchased at the party. For tickets and sponsorship information for the preview, please contact Meg Wise at 215.922.3456 ext. 311 or mwise@fleisher.org.

Fleisher is indeed "dear" to many of us. This event is intended as a fundraiser and a celebration of a great community resource. For 110 years the Fleisher Art Memorial has offered art instruction to children and adults, free of charge. More recently, Fleisher has committed resources to provide artist residencies in public schools, most of which have no art teachers on staff. Fleisher has also been a leader in supporting professional artists at all points during their careers, and for many artists the renowned Wind Challenge Exhibition Series has provided critical exposure. Fleisher's dual mission of access and education benefits everyone, regardless of background, skill level, or ability to pay. The success of Dear Fleisher will support all of these programs and help increase Fleisher's role in Philadelphia's arts and culture community.
