Wind Challenge Exhibition Series

The Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial is pleased to announce the nine winners of the 2008-2009 Wind Challenge prize. The selected artists will be featured in the prestigious Wind Challenge Exhibition Series beginning in October 2008. Along with their feature six-week show, each artist will receive a $1000 honorarium and will serve as guest artists in Fleisher's renowned arts education program.

The 2008-2009 Challenge artists are:

    Timothy Belknap, installation artist
    Kara Crombie, video artist
    Cheryl Harper, sculptor
    Inman Johanna, photographer
    Mark Khaisman, installation artist
    Yvonne Lung, installation artist
    Hope Rovelto, sculptor
    John Slaby, painter
    Constantina Zavitsanos, installation artist.

The Wind Challenge Exhibition Series is a regional competition, presented by the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial. It has gained a national reputation for excellence since its establishment in 1978. The Challenge Exhibitions encourage recognition of regional talent and serves as an incentive for Fleisher's diverse student audience to move forward with their own creative work.

About the Jurors

For the 2008-2009 season, selections were made from among a pool of 368 applicants, divided among six categories.

Lee Stoetzel, curator of the West Collection at SEI Investments, and Jane Irish, artist, juried the first round of Painting and Works on Paper applications. Jurors for Sculpture/Installation and Crafts were Michiko Okaya, Director of Galleries at Lafayette College, and Phil Simpkin, artist/senior professor at York College of the University of New York. Jacqueline van Rhyn, independent curator and former curator at the Print Center, and Eileen Neff, artist/critic, juried Time Based Media and Photography entries.

After the first round of judging, final selections were made by Jane Irish, Phil Simpkin, and Eileen Neff.

Fleisher's exhibition programs are supported in part by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, and donations from more than 2,000 student members and friends.
