Sam Belkowitz

Legong, 2002, C-print, 15" x 40"
Sam Belkowitz explores aspects of human ritual in the everyday lives of people around the world. He has traveled to South America, Indonesia, the Middle East, Africa, and Europe, using photography to catalog the way people define themselves within their societies. Belkowitz combines images from diverse geographic locations and cultures to evoke that tension one feels upon discovering a new place. He experiments with fusing together images as a trigger for the viewer’s memory to fabricate a sense of recognition and familiarity in the unknown. Mr. Belkowitz received his B.F.A. from the University of the Arts.
