SAMUEL S. FLEISHER ART MEMORIAL POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Manager of Adult Programs
POSITION CLASSIFICATION: Full-time
WAGE CLASSIFICATION: Exempt
REPORTS TO: Director of Arts Education & Community Engagement

Who we are and why this is important

The Fleisher Art Memorial is a source for inspiration, creativity and community. Every year, more than 17,000 people experience the transformative power of art by participating in our studio classes, exhibitions, and community-based programming. We are a non-profit organization committed to advancing the vision of our founder, Samuel S. Fleisher, who believed that art is one of society's greatest assets and equalizers, and from the doorway of his Graphic Sketch Club, “invited the world to come and learn art.”

Through all of our work, we strive to make art accessible to everyone regardless of age, economic means, or artistic experience. We operate one of the nation's first community-based arts centers, providing free and low-cost studio art classes along with opportunities for beginning and seasoned artists to exhibit their work in a professional gallery setting. To further enhance our mission, Fleisher's arts education programming reaches deeply into schools and community centers, and has brought us national recognition and powerful opportunities to advocate for and shape arts education initiatives throughout the region and the country.

Fleisher is well known for its commitment to the highest quality arts instruction. We enroll nearly 5,000 students annually. The new position of Manager of Adult Programs has been created to effectively manage the adult program operations, accommodate the diverse needs of our students, and support the development of our devoted and talented faculty.

Who you are

You are a self-motivated professional – personable, reliable, hard working and results-oriented. You are a smart, thoughtful, and clear thinker, who values open communication, is able to give and receive constructive feedback, and is supportive of a team-oriented environment. You are a skillful and savvy manager, willing to help us chart a new course, with enough prior experience to be confident and proactive in developing new systems and approaches to run a tight, efficient ship. Your eye is on exemplary management of the business and operating culture of Fleisher’s art school.

You are not hesitant to start projects from scratch, because you are patient, open to change and continual improvement. When tackling problems, you easily break down challenges into manageable pieces, finding creative and sustainable solutions to complex, knotty problems. You are always looking outside of the organization to identify best practices and find ways to implement them in your realm of influence.

What you will do

Along with the Director of Arts Education and your colleagues in the arts education department, you will craft, execute and manage Fleisher's programming for adults consistent with the goals and objectives outlined in Fleisher's strategic plan. You will develop and be held accountable for an annual program budget. You will recruit, hire, evaluate and manage Fleisher's faculty and provide support to them as they design curricula and teach art courses. You will attract, encourage and enlist students to participate in our programs, and you will ensure their experience at Fleisher is positive and rewarding. You will collect and use data to inform your work, and you will evaluate programming quality, content and personnel, and make improvements and changes based on prudent rationale and recognized arts education standards. You will know Fleisher's faculty and students well and be supportive of their pursuits for personal fulfillment at Fleisher. You are accommodating of a flexible schedule, because you will occasionally need to be present when evening and weekend adult classes are in session.

More about you

You have a bachelors or masters degree in arts education or equivalent experience in art education and program planning and have found that you really excel in managing and supervising others. Or, you may be early in your arts management career and are seeking a position in which you can grow professionally over the next several years. You have excellent writing skills and strong public speaking skills, and enjoy working collaboratively. You are empathetic, thoughtful and a diplomat, easily able to recognize and use your influence within and on behalf of an organization. Details are important to you, but you can also see the strategic implications of your role and responsibilities.

The benefits of becoming a member of the Fleisher team

The Fleisher team is a group of people who are committed to excellence. You will have the support of your colleagues who are artists, educators, and administrators. Each is committed to Fleisher's mission and participates honestly and openly to continually improve our programming, operations and image. Fleisher is a learning institution encouraging its staff members to develop professionally. Fleisher employees receive a competitive compensation package, including options to enroll in health, dental, life insurance and pension plans; free admission to the Philadelphia Museum of Art (PMA); and access to the PMA library and PMA staff-only educational and professional development opportunities.
