Weaving at St. John the Evangelist Church

In January of 2001, we established a new arts class for students linked to the Christ Church After School Program. This academic enrichment program served 20 transitional fourth-grade students from one class at Kirkbride Elementary, providing them with the extra support they needed to come up to grade level. The after-school program met at St. John the Evangelist Church at 3rd & Reed Streets. Kathryn Pannepacker, a South Philadelphia visual artist, taught a weaving class two days per week at the St. John’s site. The class was designed to help students learn to construct looms and weave with different textiles while exploring personal and communal stories.
