Threading Our Cultures:
A Cross-cultural Story Cloth

2nd Grade

Teacher Partner: Mrs. Nyugen-Ngo, teacher
Teaching Artist: Michael Schwartz

The students in this class represent a variety of cultures, including: Vietnamese, Cambodian, Chinese, African American, and several Lation cultures. To illuminate the rich heritages of the group this artist residency investigated their cultures through children's picture books that incorporate textiles in their themes.

The children imagined a land, learned drawing skills and vocabulary, and created fabric shapes to tell their stories on a large cloth banner. The children embellished the border by painting patterns inspired by textiles from their cultures.
