The Snowflake Project

Kindergarten - Second Grade

Teaching Artists: John Giordano, Alyse Bernstein, Kate Kern Mundie

Developed in collaboration with the kindergarten-2nd grade Small Learning Community at Meredith School in the School District’s Furness Cluster, this interdisciplinary three-week residency integrated art, language arts, math and science. Using turn-of-the-last-century micro-photographs of snowflakes by William Bentley as a starting-off point, children read stories and wrote about, made collages and prints of, and did scientific experiments in this exploration of the structure, character, and beauty of snowflakes. The project was taught again in 2001 in the 3rd grade class at E. M. Stanton Elementary School.
