Swedish Folktales: Stuga Books & Personal Folktales in Accordion Books

First Grade

Teacher Partners: Mrs. Berenato, teacher; Paul Spina, assistant teacher; Mrs. Arcaro, teacher; Elizabeth Cie, assistant teacher
Teaching Artist: Linda Connelly-Soffer

Students created illustrations of Swedish folktales as well as unique personalized story books. A performance of "Nail Soup" was also woven into the students’ study of the structure and content of folktales. A variety of teaching and learning activities were explored, among them: storytelling, creative writing, journal writing, role-playing as well as book illustration, and book making. This program naturally complemented the first grade curriculum focus on fairytales.

Before creating their accordion books, the students made Stuga books reinterpreting the folktale, "The Sausage." Here, Stuga books are on display in the Meredith School hallway.
