Monumental Philadelphia

Students investigated the history of Philadelphia neighborhoods, the city and the region through their social studies curriculum and through the elements of art and principles of design. Each student drew aspects of Philadelphia that they know. Parts of each drawing were enlarged and placed on a group canvas mural to depict a personal view of the city.

For next half of the project, the students looked at different monuments in Philadelphia through slides and reproductions. These served as inspiration for each student to create three-dimensional mixed media sculptural monument to represent their vision of what Philadelphia landscape needs.
