Being a Hero: Collograph Print

First Grade
Teacher Partner: Mrs. Sok
Teaching Artist: Kate Mundie

A Kirkbride first grader's collograph print representing, "Being a Hero."

When am I a hero? Challenged with this question, students drew personal images of heroism and then collaborated on the creation of a collagraph. The collograph process uniquely required the students to transform the figures in their drawings into three dimensional shapes and textures. These sculptural boards then became the plates for the two dimensional printed collagraph images. Cooperation, visualization, self-reflection and media transformation are all lessons aptly reflected in the rich and playful narrative represented in these collaborative images.
