Heroic Books: Fiber Arts, Silk screen, Tie-dye, hand coloring and hand sewing

Second Grade
Teacher Partner: Mrs. Tran
Teaching Artist: Alyse Bernstein

One student's "heroic book," on display at Fleisher.

Each student is a storyteller. Each book sewn together by the theme of heroism walks the reader through a visual, tactile and literary experience. Balancing the relationships between words and images when telling a story, as well as, understanding the importance of planning and process when creating a book were lessons learned in this multi-media endeavor. Whether envisioning themselves as super-non-violent heroines inspired by Ghandi or celebrating historical heroes or even people close to home this project truly engaged students on a multi-disciplinary level while simultaneously offering them a rich self-expressive art experience.
