Community Cloth:
Weaving Cultures Together

Kindergarten through 6th, and 7th and 8th Grades

Teacher Partners: Ms. Maresco, Mr. Holman, Mrs. Briscoe, and Mrs. Bryson
Teaching Artists: Barbara Bullock, Christina Johnson
Quilt Construction Artist: Jo-Ann Dooley

Seventh and eighth grade students created four large quilted fabric banners in partnership with two teaching artists that reflect the diversity of cultures in the school through art motifs and graphic symbols.

Through their study of the textile and quilt-making traditions in several cultures — American, African, Latin American and Asian — the students worked collaboratively and learned about repetition and pattern, design and composition skills, and fiber arts techniques.

In addition, the students served as mentors to the younger grades and guided them through the fabric design process. Each student in Kindergarten through sixth grade produced a fabric piece for one of the eighteen streamers hanging from the quilt.

The finished quilt measures 11 x 17 feet and is now permanently installed in the school's auditorium.
