The definition of à la prima is to finish a painting in one sitting. In this case, over the course of three hours, the student has the opportunity to learn about color and tonal harmonies, perspective, application of paint and composition. Tuition: $200 (members), $225 (non-members).

This workshop introduces students to the technical, historical, and aesthetic context of decorative and functional ceramic tiles and mosaics. Press molds are explored and we will use those pieces in combination with other mosaic materials to create a finished piece. The emphasis will be on design, pattern, construction, and finished presentation. Some basic materials will be available from the teacher and a list of online suppliers will be provided. Tuition: $200 (members), $225 (non-members), plus $35 firing fee.

Learn the ancient methods and techniques of Chinese brush painting and calligraphy and practice applying them in ways useful for today's artists. Enjoy a cup of tea while listening to mini-lectures on Chinese and Japanese art history, philosophy and culture. Do you feel stuck and ready to explore? Has that old rectangle got you down?
Collage and mixed media can often be a catalyst for change in your work, and a refreshing way to handle familiar media. Students from all art backgrounds and experience are welcome in this workshop that explores a range of materials with which to relax, take chances, and perhaps change direction. We will work with different papers, your own discarded art, and some three-dimensional shapes, as well as any and all water-based media. In addition to exploring techniques, students will work towards developing subject matter to create a sense of continuity in a larger body of work. Bring interesting papers and bits of things to share. Tuition: $200 (members), $225 (non-members), plus $10 materials fee.

No matter what field of art and design you work in, you must be fluent in the language of color. Munsell, Itten, and Albers provide the theory, which we will use in fun and unorthodox ways to manipulate color in our various media. Artists of any level will benefit from a greater understanding of the qualities, function, and impact of color. Topics will include: the qualities of color (hue, value, chroma), methods to create contrast, physical and optical color mixing, color harmonies, how colors react to each other, and the expressive and psychological aspects of color.

This workshop introduces the beginning student to the many aspects of digital photography, including: understanding how your digital camera works, strategies for taking better photos, how to use Adobe Photoshop Elements® to make basic adjustments to images, how to get great prints, and more. This introduction and overview of drawing will concentrate on how all subjects are evaluated by the total composition. Using different mediums to experiment, students will study still-life and figure drawing while analyzing arrangements of form and space. This workshop offers an introduction to kiln-fired cast glass. Types and properties of glass, annealing, and mold making are discussed. Techniques may be used to create both sculptural and functional objects. Glass will be available for purchase. Students should plan to spend approximately $50 for materials. Polyester plates, also known as Pronto or Smart Plates, give the look of stone lithographic prints but without the grinding and etching. Draw images directly on the plate with any waterproof material or transfer photocopies for image-making. The transparency of the plates allows for simple registration for multi-color printing. This is a really easy way to learn the lithographic process. Class size limited to 10 students. Tuition: $200 (members), $225 (non-members); plus $30 lab fee

This course will take the student through the basics of modeling three-dimensional form. With a series of exercises - ranging from sculpting a fruit or vegetable, to modeling a flower in relief, and sculpting one's own hand in relief or in the round - the student will explore the basic geometry of these objects. These exercises will be sculpted in clay and may be fired at the end of the workshop. Tuition: $200 (members), $255 (non-members), plus $25 materials fee (most materials will be provided).

Students learn to streamline workflow, upload and organize images, process RAW format files, create quality prints, use Adobe Photoshop Elements® or Photoshop CS3® to make make more advanced image manipulations, and more. Enjoy your morning hours in a creative studio environment devoted to learning, discussion and much painting. Do you have painting experience already? Then bring your supplies and be ready to paint. Never painted before, but want to learn? At the first class you’ll learn what materials you’ll need and you’ll be guided on how to plan your painted image. By the end of these ten sessions you’ll be thinking and painting like a true artist and you’ll have a painting or two to prove it. Subject matter will be mostly still life, but artists wishing to work from photos or abstractly from their imaginations are welcome.

This introductory course will familiarize students with the woodcutting tools and methods to allow them to carve their own blocks and produce prints. Students will explore carving techniques to obtain a range of texture, depth and dramatic contrast to create strong visual statements with their work.
