This workshop, for printmakers and non-printmakers alike, explores non-acidic printmaking processes. The workshop focuses on approaches that are technically very direct and easily manipulated, and which also allow for a wide range of personal expression. Perfect for beginners, this course introduces students to the art of oil painting. Students learn about the materials, tools, organization of the palette and sound approaches to the execution of a painting. Composition, drawing, underpainting, overpainting and à la prima techniques are explored. Students learn to represent form and space through the elements of background, foreground, cast shadows, chiaroscuro and highlights while working from arrangements that will last for two to three weeks. This workshop introduces students to the technical, historical, and aesthetic context of decorative and functional ceramic tiles and mosaics. Press molds are explored and we use those pieces in combination with other mosaics materials to create a finished piece. The emphasis is on design, pattern, construction, and finished presentation. No matter what field of art and design you work in, you must be fluent in the language of color. Munsell, Itten, and Albers provide the theory, which we use in fun and unorthodox ways to manipulate color in our various media. Artists of any level will benefit from a greater understanding of the qualities, function, and impact of color. Topics will include: the qualities of color (hue, value, chroma), methods to create contrast, physical and optical color mixing, color harmonies, how colors react to each other, and the expressive and psychological aspects of color. Kiln-fired Glass: Fusing and Slumping [W315] |

Students learn how to cut glass and fit pieces together for complex designs using colored sheet glass and powdered frit while learning about glass types, compatibility, and annealing. Glass pieces can be used to make architectural panels, bowls, platters, or shaped elements for stained glass panels. All levels are welcome. This workshop is for experienced artists who need time in the lithography and etching studios. Participants must have technical proficiency, be capable of working independently, and have valid Fleisher membership. Fees: $125 for seven week session (unlimited studio use during posted hours) for those previously approved for studio use, or $175 for new participants (includes orientation session; please email eromick@fleisher.org to arrange appointment).

This class is for students with some prior knowledge of photography and computers. The class emphasizes creativity and aesthetics, while also unraveling the camera's bells and whistles. Students learn to streamline workflow, upload and organize images, process RAW format files, create quality prints, use Adobe Photoshop Elements® or Photoshop CS3® to make make more advanced image manipulations, and more. Familiarity with the Windows operating system is required; prior knowledge of Photoshop Elements® or CS3® is not necessary. This course, open to beginners and advanced students, explores the particular concerns of working from the life model: anatomy, structure, perspective, rhythm and composition of complex forms. Emphasis is placed on sensitivity to ‘mark making’. Each class period progresses from short poses and specific approaches, i.e. - gesture, positive and negative shape, straight line drawing, etc., to longer poses. A variety of dry and wet media are used to familiarize students with options. Throughout the course the work of figurative artists is be introduced and discussed. Explore another avenue for expressing your art designs in this workshop on cloth, stitchery, and the quilted arts. Learn about commercial, hand-dyed and specialty fabrics and basic techniques for constructing an art piece out of fabric, from simple collage to sewing seams and appliqué. Discover the design possibilities of fibers and embellishments. We will touch on color, value, line, and composition. Sewing experience is helpful but not required.
