Students combine storytelling and visual art in this workshop. Using collaged elements, each students creates a self-portrait in a style reminiscent of a favorite artist form history. Ever dreamed of designing clothing for your favorite celebrity, sports team, super hero or even for yourself? This workshop makes you the designer for your own one-of-a-kind clothing collection. Students create portfolios of designs using magazine cut outs, fabric swatches, hand made stamps, fancy papers and special embellishments. Students are taught how to develop narrative skills, problem solving techniques, and creative thinking within an illustrative context. A variety of media, methods, styles, and techniques are demonstrated to create black and white, and color illustrations. We explore children's books, editorial and sequential (graphic novel) illustrations. The class serves as an introduction to students considering a career in art. Each student constructs a personal, one-of-a-kind journal for collecting images and thoughts that express and illustrate a personal story or experience, real or imagined. Each day is devoted to creating a new page for the journal, using a variety of techniques including watercolor, markers, colored pencils, and collaged embellishments as well as stamping and paper folding. Students look at work by famous architects and designers, along with nontraditional living spaces of variouys cultures. They then plan out a model “dream home” of their own with blue prints and interior design inspiration boards. The actual model will be built using a wide variety of creative building materials. Students learn about nature through creative hands-on projects in this workshop that examines the natural environment of animals, plants, objects and space. Oaxacan animals are those brightly colored fanciful wooden carved animals from Mexico. Some are based on real animals and some are mythical combinations of different types of creatures. This class explores the history and significance of poster art. We'll look at a variety of posters from propaganda and advertising to fan posters, fanzines and music posters. Students learn the basics of printmaking, starting small and working toward producing a large print using a reductive method to make an edition of ten three-color prints. What would it be like if a number of famous artists gathered for dinner with place settings representing their artwork? Participants in this workshop learn the answer as they create decorative plates, cups, and utensils, complemented with appropriately matching napkins and placemats -- all themed to an artist of their choosing. Through hands-on projects, students learn the vocabulary of design, gaining the conceptual tools necessary for their future in the arts. How to Register

BEGINNING MAY 1:

Deadline to Register
Fleisher workshops fill fast, so early registration is recommended. The deadline for receiving registrations is May 30 for adult workshops and June 23 for children's and teen programs. Registrations for open workshops will be accepted after the deadlines, but workshops that have not met minimum enrollment levels by these dates will be cancelled.

Tuition, Materials Fees, and Membership
All participants in Fleisher’s summer workshops are requested to give a membership contribution in addition to the tuition fees (for adults: $15 for the semester, or $60 for a full twelve months; for children: $10 for the semester; for families: $90 for a full twelve months). Tuition costs with model, firing, and/or materials fees are listed with each course description.

Financial aid is available on a limited basis; call 215.922.3456, ext. 312, or download a financial aid form before you register. The deadlines for submitting financial aid forms are June 1 for adults and June 29 for children and teens.

Refunds/ Withdrawals
If Fleisher cancels a workshop due to inadequate enrollment, registrants will receive full refunds for all fees paid for that class, excluding memberships. Students who wish to withdraw from a class after registering must notify Fleisher's Registrar in writing in order to receive a refund.
Adult workshops: 75% of the tuition will be refunded before the first class, 50% before the second class, and 25% before the third class. After the third class, there are no refunds. Children, Teen, and Parent workshops: 75% of the tuition will be refunded before the first class. After the first class, there are no refunds
