Perfect for beginners, this course introduces students to the art of oil painting. Students learn about the materials, tools, organization of the palette and sound approaches to the execution of a painting. Composition, drawing, underpainting, overpainting and à la prima techniques are explored. Students learn to represent form and space through the elements of background, foreground, cast shadows, chiaroscuro and highlights while working from arrangements that will last for two to three weeks. This workshop introduces students to the technical, historical, and aesthetic context of decorative and functional ceramic tiles and mosaics. Press molds are explored and we use those pieces in combination with other mosaics materials to create a finished piece. The emphasis is on design, pattern, construction, and finished presentation. Some basic materials are available from the teacher and a list of Internet suppliers will be provided. Clay must be purchased at Fleisher. No matter what field of art and design you work in, you must be fluent in the language of color. Munsell, Itten, and Albers provide the theory, which we use in fun and unorthodox ways to manipulate color in our various media. Artists of any level will benefit from a greater understanding of the qualities, function, and impact of color. Topics will include: the qualities of color (hue, value, chroma), methods to create contrast, physical and optical color mixing, color harmonies, how colors react to each other, and the expressive and psychological aspects of color.

Kiln-fired Glass: Fusing and Slumping [W315] |

Students learn how to cut glass and fit pieces together for complex designs using colored sheet glass and powdered frit while learning about glass types, compatibility, and annealing. This workshop is for experienced artists who need time in the lithography and etching studios. Participants must have technical proficiency, be capable of working independently, and have valid Fleisher membership. Students explore the full scope of the artist’s book, including conceptual development, design, reproduction techniques, and binding.
