This series of lectures is a survey of the history of Western art and architecture, including prehistoric art, the ancient Near East and Egypt, the Aegean, ancient Greece, the Etruscans and Romans, early Christian and Byzantine art, the early Middle Ages, Romanesque and Gothic art, and precursors to the Italian Renaissance.

This is the recommended class for all students coming to Fleisher without previous instruction or experience. Concepts covered include composition, design, tone, line, and perspective. Drawing I on Tuesday and Thursday nights have identical lessons each week.

Figure Drawing I [AO325S] | Mr. Douglas Randall

This class serves as a bridge from drawing classes to the figure classes. If you can write, you can draw. This class is designed as an introduction to the possibilities of figure drawing. It is really about learning to see.

Students will gain an understanding of basic proportions and anatomy of the human body as well as its movement and expressive potential. Emphasis will be on developing a personal approach to drawing the figure, moving from quick studies toward creating finished drawings. The duration of model poses may vary. Model card required.

Figure Drawing II [AO326S] | Mr. James Dupree

For students with at least two terms of drawing classes and an interest in the figure and its treatment, this class concentrates on drawing from life and costumed poses that range from thirty seconds to twenty minutes. Model card required.

Figure Painting I [AO324S] | Ms. Dianne Corbeau

As an introduction to the fundamentals of painting the figure, this class encourages careful and deliberate study of value and color in flesh painting. Students will explore the wide possibilities of a limited palette and develop skills for simplifying complex forms into two dimensions on canvas. Working from a model, students begin the class painting small color and value sketches in oil and advance to a larger, more finished project. Participants must have figure drawing and basic painting experience. Duration of model poses may vary. Model card required.

For the student with a basic understanding of drawing and painting, this class offers the opportunity to pursue an interest in figurative subjects. Emphasis is as much on design, color, and composition of painting as on rendering the subject matter. Poses last for up to eight nights. Model card required.

Figure Sculpture I, II, III [AO327S] | Ms. Cathy Hopkins

These classes are for students interested in figurative and abstract work in clay. Each class will have its own model schedule ranging from single night to multiple weeks at the end of the term (schedules will be posted in studio.) Students need to bring their own armatures, or buy them in Fleisher’s school store. A casting specialist is on site Tuesday and Thursday nights to assist students wishing to cast sculptures in plaster. $10 materials fee for clay. Model card required.

Painting I [AO323S] | Mr. Frederic Kaplan

Using still-life subjects, this oil painting class stresses color, composition, and various technical approaches. It is essential for students interested in this course to have drawing abilities. First-time painters must be present for the first three classes. $5 prop fee.

Sculptural Forms I [AO328S] | Ms. Darla Jackson

This class has reached its maximum enrollment, but we are accepting names for a waiting list.

This class is designed for first-time sculpture students and others who would like a progressive, focused class. Students explore a range of three-dimensional working methods using a variety of materials, starting with simple studies of organic and geometric forms and culminating in basic figure and animal shapes in clay and plaster. Although students may enter the program at any time during the term, participants are encouraged to attend from the beginning to benefit from the cumulative curriculum. Students must purchase clay from Fleisher’s supply store.

 Wednesday

Anatomy Lectures [AO330S] | Mr. Al Gury

Painter Al Gury returns to Fleisher for two special anatomy lectures that include demonstrations of drawing and painting. [On these nights the regularly scheduled figure drawing sessions will begin a half-hour later.]

The Figure - 25 February 2009
This session provides an overview of the whole figure and its construction system, touching upon anatomy and figure drawing principles.

The Portrait - 18 March 2009
This lecture on color, portrait palettes, color mixing, and portrait structure includes a painting demonstration.

This free-tuition studio class for Fleisher members only offers participants 2 hours of monitored figure drawing. Poses last twenty minutes. Model card required.

Mixed Materials Sculpture I, II [AO331S] | Ms. Joni Woods

Each week of this class will be devoted to learning how to use clay, plaster, wood, plastic, and sheet metal as mediums for sculpture, with each participant working toward a final project. Techniques of cutting, carving, and joinery will be covered as well as artistic issues of composition and content. Students will be given materials lists at first meeting and some materials will be available for purchase in the class. $15 materials/firing fee

For students seeking guidance and criticism to focus technical and creative skills, this intellectually challenging course emphasizes color, design, composition, and visual awareness. Students are welcome to join at any point in the term and should bring examples of their work for the first class.

Concentrates on a variety of drawing materials including pastel, ink and charcoal. Still life and models will be used throughout the course. Model card required on certain dates.

This class is geared toward the student with an interest in an open studio atmosphere. Poses last twenty minutes. Model card required.

For those with knowledge of basic painting techniques, this class develops skills and expands imagery in figurative and still-life subjects. Model card required.

Watercolor I [AO346S] | Ms. Lisa Volta

The prospective student for this course should have a background in drawing and should be interested in color theory, design, and technical aspects of the watercolor medium. First time watercolorists must attend the first four classes.

Watercolor II: Still Life [AO341S] | Ms. Elissa Glassgold
7:30 - 9:30 P.M.

This class is for students with a basic knowledge of watercolor technique who want to improve painting skills.




How to Register

In person on the first night one attends the class, by mail (using the registration form [PDF, 98kb]), or through this website (follow the secure link in the course description).

These courses are available to anyone at any time (except for those classes which may have reached capacity), and enrollment is ongoing throughout the term — where available.

Membership and Materials Fees
No instructional fees are charged, but adult students are asked to take a membership of $30 for the term, or $60 for an annual membership ($40 for senior citizens; $90 for a household). Students must purchase their own supplies and may view materials lists from the link supplied with the class description. Supplies may be purchased at the Fleisher school store during the first hour of each class session. Students working from the model are required to purchase a model fee card, available in the school store, at the front desk, or in the school office. Prices are $4 for one class, $15 for four classes, or $30 for ten classes. Fleisher members showing their membership card at the time of purchase will be given bonuses of one additional night on the four-night card and two extra nights on the ten-night card. Model fee cards are valid through the end of the Spring 2009 semester.

Materials fees are charged in classes that use materials that are more conveniently purchased in bulk by Fleisher. These fees are listed with their appropriate classes and must be paid at the time of registration — these fees are nonrefundable.
