This series of lectures is a survey of the history of Western art and architecture, including Renaissance, Mannerism, Baroque, Rococo, Neoclassical, Romanticism, Realism, Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Expressionism, Cubism, and modern art through contemporary art.

This class serves as a bridge from drawing classes to the figure classes. If you can write, you can draw. This class is designed as an introduction to the possibilities of figure drawing. It is really about learning to see.
Students will gain an understanding of basic proportions and anatomy of the human body as well as its movement and expressive potential. Emphasis will be on developing a personal approach to drawing the figure, moving from quick studies toward creating finished drawings. The duration of model poses may vary. Model card required.

Mr. James Dupree

For students with at least two terms of drawing classes and an interest in the figure and its treatment, this class concentrates on drawing from life and costumed poses that range from thirty seconds to twenty minutes. Model card required.

Ms. Dianne Corbeau

As an introduction to the fundamentals of painting the figure, this class encourages careful and deliberate study of value and color in flesh painting. Students will explore the wide possibilities of a limited palette and develop skills for simplifying complex forms into two dimensions on canvas. Working from a model, students begin the class painting small color and value sketches in oil and advance to a larger, more finished project. Participants must have figure drawing and basic painting experience. Duration of model poses may vary. Model card required.

Ms. A. M. Weaver

For the student with a basic understanding of drawing and painting, this class offers the opportunity to pursue an interest in figurative subjects. Emphasis is as much on design, color, and composition of painting as on rendering the subject matter. Poses last for up to eight nights. Model card required.
Figure Sculpture I, II, III [AO327] |
Ms. Cathy Hopkins
7:00 - 9:30 P.M.
These classes are for students interested in figurative and abstract work in clay. Each class will have its own model schedule ranging from single night to multiple weeks at the end of the term (schedules will be posted in studio.) Students need to bring their own armatures, or buy them in Fleisher’s school store. A casting specialist is on site Tuesday and Thursday nights to assist students wishing to cast sculptures in plaster. $10 materials fee for clay. Model card required.

Using still-life subjects, this oil painting class stresses color, composition, and various technical approaches. It is essential for students interested in this course to have drawing abilities. First-time painters must be present for the first three classes. $5 prop fee.
Sculptural Forms I [AO328] |

This class is designed for first-time sculpture students and others who would like a progressive, focused class. Students explore a range of three-dimensional working methods using a variety of materials, starting with simple studies of organic and geometric forms and culminating in basic figure and animal shapes in clay and plaster. Although students may enter the program at any time during the term, participants are encouraged to attend from the beginning to benefit from the cumulative curriculum. Students must purchase clay from Fleisher’s supply store.

Painter Al Gury returns to Fleisher for two special anatomy lectures that include demonstrations of drawing and painting. [On these nights the regularly scheduled figure drawing sessions will begin a half-hour later.]
The Figure - 15 October 2008
This session provides an overview of the whole figure and its construction system, touching upon anatomy and figure drawing principles.
The Portrait - 19 November 2008
This lecture on color, portrait palettes, color mixing, and portrait structure includes a painting demonstration.

Mixed Materials Sculpture I, II [AO331] |

Each week of this workshop will be devoted to learning how to use clay, plaster, wood, plastic, and sheet metal as mediums for sculpture, with each participant working toward a final project. Techniques of cutting, carving, and joinery will be covered as well as artistic issues of composition and content. Students will be given materials lists at first meeting and some materials will be available for purchase in the class. $15 materials/firing fee
