Dirty Pictures: A Survey of Art Censorship [AO340-C] |
Dr. Nancy Heller
6:00 - 7:00 P.M.
6 December 2007
In 1999, based on descriptions of a "Madonna and Child" painting decorated with lumps of elephant dung, New York's mayor threatened to evict the Brooklyn Museum of Art from its City-owned building. While that was an extreme case, as this lecture will show, there has been some sort of art censorship all over the world for as long as there has been art. We will examine paintings, sculptures, photographs, and buildings that have incited the wrath of powerful figures in recent years, indicating how these cases relate to, or differ from, historical ones.

This lecture will examine the roots of radical modern and contemporary art, demonstrating how easily even the most outrageous-seeming objects can be analyzed, resulting in new, and sometimes surprising, sources of aesthetic pleasure.
