Fall 2010 Tuition-free Classes for Adults

TEN WEEKS: 13 SEPTEMBER — 18 NOVEMBER 2010

Fleisher's tuition-free classes offer students the opportunity to explore a variety of artistic disciplines at the introductory level under the guidance of our talented and supportive faculty. The classes are ideal for students who are new to art-making, need a refresher, or want to experiment with a new medium. (If you are at an advanced level in your art-making practice, our intensive workshop classes may be more appropriate for you.) These classes are limited in size and filled on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to register early!

Advance registration and Fleisher membership required.

Registration begins Monday, August 2nd.

Anatomy Lectures [AF310F] | Mr. Al Gury

Painter Al Gury returns to Fleisher for two special anatomy lectures that include demonstrations of drawing and painting.

The Figure - 4 October 2010
This session provides an overview of the whole figure and its construction system, touching upon anatomy and figure drawing principles.

The Portrait - 8 November 2010
This lecture on color, portrait palettes, color mixing, and portrait structure includes a painting demonstration.

This series of lectures is a survey of the history of Western art and architecture, from the prehistoric era to the Italian Renaissance. Class size limited to 40 students.

Drawing: Introduction [AF321F] | Mr. David Berger

This is the recommended class for all students coming to Fleisher without previous instruction or experience. Concepts covered include composition, design, tone, line, and perspective. Class size limited to 50 students.

Figure Drawing: Introduction [AF322F] | Mr. Douglas Randall

This class is an introduction to seeing the figure. Attendance is important, as each week we will focus on different aspects of drawing the figure: expressing movement, proportion, hands, feet, portrait, line quality, light and shadow, foreshortening, etc. Some prior drawing experience recommended. Class size limited to 35 students. Lab fee: $45 for models

Introduction to Color [AF220F] | Mrs. Marie Elcin

This course will provide a firm foundation in color theory. Topics will include qualities of color, methods of creating contrast and physical and optical color mixing. All experience levels welcome. Class size limited to 20 students.

Lithography: Introduction [AF323F] | Ms. Alyse Bernstein

This class provides an introduction to lithography, a technique in which drawings on stone or metal plate are chemically treated to accept ink, and may then be used to print multiples. Prior drawing experience recommended. Class size limited to 10 students. Lab fee: $40 for chemicals and equipment

Painting Intuitively [AF324F] | Ms. Karen Baumeister

This course is for artists who have the desire to experience an intuitive approach to painting. Warm up exercises are designed to free the mind and hand will serve as points of departure. Relationships between technical skill and personal sensibility, rational decision making vs. intuitive response, and conscious vs. unconscious art making will be addressed. Class size limited to 25 students.

This class introduces students to the materials and techniques of oil painting. Using still-life subjects, this class stresses color, composition, and various technical approaches. Prior drawing experience required. First time painters must attend first three classes. Class size limited to 20 students. Lab fee: $5 for props

Sculptural Forms: Introduction [AF326F] | Ms. Darla Jackson

This class exposes students to a range of three-dimensional working methods using a variety of materials, including clay. No prior experience necessary. Class size limited to 14 students. Lab fee: $10 for some materials.

Etching: Introduction [AF330F] | Mr. Ron Ribant

This course provides and introduction to etching, a family of printmaking methods in which marks are incised in a plate, ink is applied, and then transferred via pressure onto paper. Techniques will include hard- and soft-ground etching, aquatint, drypoint, chine collé, and sugarlift. Prior drawing experience recommended. Class size limited to 10 students. Lab fee: $40 for chemicals and equipment

This class provides an introduction to the basic proportions and anatomy of the human body while helping students discover a personal approach to drawing the nude figure. Some prior drawing experience recommended. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab fee: $45 for models

Two-figure Sculpture [AF332F] | Mr. Christopher Smith

This class for those with clay figure sculpting experience concentrates on the development of a dialogue between forms and gestures of two figures with the goal of enlivening the space that exists between them to be successfully realized as a single, narrative composition. Two models pose concurrently through each session. Clay must be purchased at Fleisher. Class size limited to 20 students. Lab fee: $85 fee for models and some materials

Ceramics: Introduction [AF340F] | Ms. Christianne Kapps

This class provides an introduction to creating sculptural and functional earthenware. Students learn various construction, glazing, and ornamentation methods. No prior experience necessary. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab fee: $40 lab fee for firing and glazing.

Drawing Space and Form [AF341F] | Mr. David Berger

This class teaches techniques and concepts to enhance the illusion of three-dimensional form and depth of space through the study of linear perspective. Scale change, overlap and variation of line weight will be discussed as well as basic concepts of two-point perspective. Students will draw diagrammatically as well as from observation while utilizing still life, large scale constructions, the figure in an environment, and architectural spaces. Class size limited to 50 students.

Students explore the fundamentals of painting the figure, such as working with a limited palette and simplifying complex forms into two dimensions. Prior figure drawing and some painting experience recommended. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab fee: $45 for models

Film Photography: Introduction [AF343F] | Mr. Ahmed Salvador

This class provides an introduction to using a manual 35mm camera. In addition to learning how to manipulate the camera's settings for greater control, students learn how to develop, print, and manipulate black-and-white images in a darkroom. No prior experience necessary. Class size limited to 14 students. Lab fee: $40 for chemicals and equipment

Mixed Materials Sculpture: Introduction [AF344F] | Ms. Joni Woods

Explore three-dimensional sculpture through the use plaster, wood, sheet metal and more. Learn to use taps and pop rivets to join materials and drills, jigsaws, sanders and dremels to alter them. Class size limited to 15 students. Lab fee: $10 for some materials.

Observation, Memory and Imagination [AF345F] | Mr. John Sevcik

How do you make a memory into a concrete painting? Strategies of observation, invention, and memory through drawing will precede the creation of new paintings. Everything from thumbnail sketches to finished canvas will be covered in a step-by-step manner. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab fee: $5 for still-life props

Portrait Sculpture: Introduction [AF346F] | Mr. James Victor

Clay portrait busts will be modeled on head armatures while working from a live model. Emphasis will be placed on keeping a sense of vitality and spontaneity in the modeling. Class size limited to 20 students. Lab fees: $50 for models and some materials
