Tuition-Free Classes For Adults

Fleisher is in its 114th year of providing tuition-free classes to adults of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of artistic experience. Offered in a supportive and accessible environment, tuition-free classes provide introduction to a wide range of media, led by members of Fleisher’s esteemed faculty. Fleisher offers students who are new to art-making, need a refresher course, or are ready to experiment with a new medium, an opportunity to explore their creative side.

Tuition-free classes for adults are offered in ten-week terms during fall, winter and spring.

A current Fleisher membership is mandatory for students enrolling in tuition-free classes. Those without a current membership will not be permitted to attend class. Please refer to the Policy on Free Class Attendance below for details.

Tuition is free, but there are some fees
No fees for instruction are required for students enrolled in Fleisher’s tuition-free classes, but a Fleisher membership is mandatory. Students may be required to pay a nonrefundable lab fee which range in amounts depending on the type of class and materials needed. Lab fees and model fees generally range from $5 to $45.

If you are ready for a more advanced level of learning, or want to explore other course offerings, Fleisher’s low-cost workshops may be more appropriate for you. Workshops are limited in size and fill on a first-come, first-served basis, so be sure to register early!

POLICY ON TUITION-FREE CLASS ATTENDANCE
Fleisher’s tuition-free classes fill quickly and are in high demand. In order to attend tuition-free classes, students must:

  • Be a current Fleisher member
  • Attend the first two classes of each session
  • If a student can not attend either the first or second class, they must contact Fleisher’s registrar in advance of the start of the term.
  • Student’s who miss either the first or second class without notifying the registrar will be removed from the roster, and the seat will be offered to a student from the waitlist.

Dibujo Basico/Basic Drawing [afsp-m-62] | Mr. Henry Bermudez

Basic Drawing/ Dibujo Básico- is an introductory bi-lingual course to the art of drawing. The course will review basic drawing techniques that focus on observation of spaces, objects, and the human figure. Students will use different media and will develop their composition, line, and design skills. No prerequisites. (This class will be taught in English and in Spanish.)

Basic Drawing/ Dibujo Básico es un curso introductorio bilingüe centrado en el arte del dibujo. El curso revisará las técnicas básicas de dibujo como en la observación de los espacios, objetos y la figura humana. Los alumnos utilizarán diferentes materiales y desarrollará sus habilidades de composición, línea, y diseño. No hay requisitos previos. (la clase se dara imparte en inglés y en español.)

This series of lectures is a survey of the history of Western art and architecture, from the prehistoric era to the Italian Renaissance. Class size limited to 25 students.

This is the recommended class for all students coming to Fleisher without previous instruction or experience. Concepts covered include composition, design, tone, line, and perspective. Class size limited to 25 students.

This class is an introduction to the figure. Attendance is important, as each week we will focus on different aspects of drawing the figure: expressing movement, proportion, hands, feet, portrait, line quality, light and shadow, foreshortening, etc. Some prior drawing experience recommended. This class will introduce students to creating sculpture from models. Students need to bring their own armatures, or buy them in our school store. No prior experience necessary. Class size limited to 18 students. Model: $45, Lab Fee: $5 for clay

Lithography: Introduction [afsp-t-70] | Ms. Veronica Hanssens
7:00 - 9:30 PM

This class provides an introduction to lithography, a technique in which drawings on stone or metal plate are chemically treated to accept ink, and may then be used to print multiples. Prior drawing experience recommended. Class size limited to 10 students. Lab fee: $40 for chemicals and equipment.

Oil Painting: Introduction [afsp-t-73] | Mr. Frederic Kaplan

This class introduces students to the materials and techniques of oil painting. Using still-life subjects, this class stresses color, composition, and various technical approaches. Prior drawing experience required. First time painters must attend first three classes. Class size limited to 20 students. Lab fee: $5 for props.

Painting Intuitively [afsp-t-75] | Ms. Karen Baumeister

This course is for artists who have the desire to experience an intuitive approach to painting. Warm up exercises are designed to free the mind and hand will serve as points of departure. Relationships between technical skill and personal sensibility, rational decision making vs. intuitive response, and conscious vs. unconscious art making will be addressed. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab Fee: $5.00

This class exposes students to a range of three-dimensional working methods using a variety of materials, including clay. No prior experience necessary. Class size limited to 14 students. Lab fee: $10 for some materials. Model Fee: $20

This is a still life class which introduces students to color theory, design, and the technical aspects of watercolor. Prior drawing experience is recommended.

Students explore the fundamentals of painting the figure, such as working with a limited palette and simplifying complex forms into two dimensions. Prior figure drawing and some painting experience recommended. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab fee: $45 for models

Two-Figure Sculpture [afsp-w-78] | Mr. Christopher Smith
7:00 - 9:30 P.M.

This class provides students with two models from which to work. Poses will range from twenty minutes to sustained two or three session lengths. All media except dry pastels is welcome and participants must have figure drawing experience. The first three sessions will be an introduction to the special issues of working from two figures. Model Fee: $90, Lab Fee: $5

Ceramics: Introduction [afsp-th-59] | Ms. Christianne Kapps

This class provides an introduction to creating sculptural and functional earthenware. Students learn various construction, glazing, and ornamentation methods. No prior experience necessary. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab fee: $40 lab fee for firing and glazing.

Color Theory: Introduction [afsp-th-61] | Mrs. Marie Elcin
7:00 - 9:30 P.M.

This course will provide a firm foundation in color theory. Topics will include qualities of color, methods of creating contrast and physical and optical color mixing. All experience levels welcome. Class size limited to 25 students. Munsell, Itten, and Albers provide the theory, which we use in fun and unorthodox ways to manipulate color in our various media. Artists of any level will benefit from a greater understanding of the qualities, function, and impact of color. Topics will include: the qualities of color (hue, value, chroma), methods to create contrast, physical and optical color mixing, color harmonies, how colors react to each other, and the expressive and psychological aspects of color.

Film Photography: Introduction [afsp-th-69] | Mr. Ahmed Salvador
7:00 - 9:30 PM

This class provides an introduction to using a manual 35mm camera. In addition to learning how to manipulate the camera's settings for greater control, students learn how to develop, print, and manipulate black-and-white images in a darkroom. No prior experience necessary. Class size limited to 14 students. Lab fee: $40 for chemicals and equipment

Mixed Materials Sculpture: Introduction [afsp-th-71] | Ms. Joni Woods

Explore three-dimensional sculpture through the use plaster, wood, sheet metal and more. Learn to use taps and pop rivets to join materials and drills, jigsaws, sanders and dremels to alter them. Class size limited to 12 students. Lab fee: $10 for some materials.

Observation, Memory and Imagination [afsp-th-72] | Mr. John Sevcik

How do you make a memory into a concrete painting? Strategies of observation, invention, and memory through drawing will precede the creation of new paintings. Everything from thumbnail sketches to finished canvas will be covered in a step-by-step manner. Class size limited to 25 students. Lab fee: $5 for still-life props.

Printmaking Techniques: Introduction [afsp-th-76] | Ms. Elaine Erne

This class will be an introduction to the printmaking processes of etching, relief, and lithography. Students will gain knowledge of plate preparation, image making, ink, paper, and printing. Students will explore each technique by creating a small edition of prints. Class size limited to 10 students. Lab Fee: $40 for equipment and chemicals

Proportional Drawing: Introduction [afSP-th-63] | Mr. David Berger
7:30 - 9:30 PM

This class teaches techniques and concepts to enhance the illusion of three-dimensional form and depth of space through the study of linear perspective. Scale change, overlap and variation of line weight will be discussed as well as basic concepts of two-point perspective. Students will draw diagrammatically as well as from observation while utilizing still life, large scale constructions, the figure in an environment, and architectural spaces.
