About Tuition-Free Classes

Fleisher is in its 114th year of providing tuition-free classes to adults of all ages, backgrounds, and levels of artistic experience. Offered in a supportive and accessible environment, tuition-free classes provide introduction to a wide range of media, led by members of Fleisher’s esteemed faculty. Fleisher offers students who are new to art-making, need a refresher course, or are ready to experiment with a new medium, an opportunity to explore their creative side.

Tuition-free classes for adults are offered in ten-week terms during fall, winter and spring.

A current Fleisher membership is mandatory for students enrolling in tuition-free classes. Those without a current membership will not be permitted to attend class. Please refer to the Policy on Free Class Attendance below for details.

Tuition is free, but there are some fees
No fees for instruction are required for students enrolled in Fleisher’s tuition-free classes, but a Fleisher membership is mandatory. Students may be required to pay a nonrefundable lab fee which range in amounts depending on the type of class and materials needed. Lab fees and model fees generally range from $5 to $45.

POLICY ON TUITION-FREE CLASS ATTENDANCE
Fleisher’s tuition-free classes fill quickly and are in high demand. In order to attend tuition-free classes, students must:
  • Be a current Fleisher member
  • Attend the first two classes of each session
  • If a student can not attend either the first or second class, they must contact Fleisher’s registrar in advance of the start of the term.
  • Student’s who miss either the first or second class without notifying the registrar will be removed from the roster, and the seat will be offered to a student from the waitlist.

Do you have a ceramic sculpture you would like to cast in plaster? Bring it and your motivation! This open studio is for the self-directed student or artist. However, if you have no previous experience the specialist will be available for consultation and assistance. Students will need to purchase a $20 casting card for each piece they cast, regardless of size. These cards are available at the front desk or Art Supply Store and are given to the class monitor. Participants must have a valid Fleisher membership.

Basic Drawing/ Dibujo Básico is an introductory bi-lingual course on the art of drawing. The course will review basic drawing techniques that focus on observation of spaces, objects, and the human figure. Students will use different media and will develop their composition, line, and design skills. No prerequisites. (Just note that the class will be taught in English and in Spanish.)

El curso revisará las técnicas básicas de dibujo como en la observación de los espacios, objetos y la figura humana. This is a recommended class for all students coming to Fleisher without previous instruction or experience. You will learn step by step instructions to begin a drawing. You will learn about sighting techniques, negative space, visual measurements and the use of guidelines. Starting by drawing from Xerox copies of flat geometric shapes, in each class you will build on your skills until you will be drawing from life, both single objects and a still life with multiple objects. We will work primarily in pencil and charcoal. Concepts covered include composition, design, tone, line, and perspective.

This class will introduce students to basic theories, principals, and techniques to successfully draw the figure. We will concentrate on improving your eye and knowledge through handouts, note taking, demonstrations, and lots of drawing from a live model. There will be one-on-one critique, group discussions and dialoguing to help your drawing skills. Topics include: gesture drawings, long drawing, drawing from multiple view points, composing multiple figures on the page, discussing methods and materials, etc. The class skills taught will prepare students for many of the other classes at Fleisher like painting, printmaking, sculpture, and collage.

Learn how to use a variety of materials and objects as mediums for sculpture. Experimental techniques using basic hand tools on plaster, wood and recycled materials will be covered as well as artistic issues of composition and content. Beginning to experienced students welcome.

This is your introduction to the printmaking processes of etching, relief and lithography. You will explore each technique by creating an edition of prints and will gain knowledge of plate preparation, image making, ink, paper selection and printing.

This course is a survey of works of art throughout history, with emphasis on the Western perspective. Paintings, sculpture, photography, architecture and time-based media are covered. The course is lecture-based and delivery is via PowerPoint slides. Each semester starts off where the previous one ended. We will begin with important art movements in the first half of the 20th century and move forward in time through to postmodernism. Movements covered along the way include Cubism, Futurism, Abstract Expression, Minimalism, Color Field painting, Feminist Art, Photorealism, Happenings, and Op Art. Student discourse is anticipated and encouraged.*Please note that this course will run from 7:00 - 8:00 PM

This class is an introduction to drawing the figure. Each week we will focus on different aspects of drawing and using the figure to create meaningful and considered drawings from observation: expressing movement, measurement, scale, composition, tone, etc. Some prior drawing experience recommended, but by no means required. Expect the course to be a fun and challenging exploration of drawing the figure.

We will be modeling clay figures from a live model, and all poses will be standing. There will be four successive poses: a one week, a two week, a three week, and a four week pose. If you wish to do abstract work, that's fine. As always, you can do whatever you want; this is an art class. Everybody is welcome, and beginners are encouraged! This class will provide basic knowledge about preparing, drawing and printing a lithograph from limestone. Students will print a small edition of the completed drawing from a stone within the Fleisher collection. Previous experience in drawing and an interest in working with others is helpful. Students who are Fleisher members are permitted to utilize the studio outside of class time for an additional hourly rate.

This course concentrates on the developement of a dialogue between the forms and gestures of two figures with the goal of enlivening the space between them. Two models will pose concurrently through each session. This course is for those with clay sculpting experience.

Color Theory, Introduction [afsp-w-43] | Mr. Anthony Vega

Come explore the wonderful world of color! From cave paintings, the work of old masters to the largest high definition TV screens, color is something artists work with and think about. Investigate the many aspects of color including: value, hue, chroma, contrast and optical relationships. Explore the personal, cultural and visual relationships you have with color as we discuss visual intelligence, symbolism, intuition, identity and beauty. Instructor lectures will compliment your hands-on experimentation with color using both color chips and paint. This course does not require any background in color and all levels of experience are welcome.

As an introduction to the fundamentals of painting the figure, this class encourages careful and deliberate study of value and color in flesh painting. You will explore limited palette and develop skills for simplifying complex forms. Working from the model you will begin with small color/value sketches in oil.

A structured course for the beginning student that introduces painting materials and basic techniques. The focus is on oil painting, but acrylics are permitted. Previous drawing experience strongly recommended.

This class teaches techniques and concepts to enhance the illusion of three-dimensional form and depth of space through the study of linear perspective. Scale change, overlap and variation of line weight will be discussed as well as basic concepts of two-point perspective. Students will draw diagrammatically as well as from observation while utilizing still life, large scale constructions, the figure in an environment, and architectural spaces.

Students will explore a range of three-dimensional working methods, starting with simple studies of organic and geometric forms and culmination in basic figure and animal shapes. Each piece will be sculpted in clay and fired at the end of the semester. No prior experience necessary.

This course will cover basic techniques of hand-building, wheel-throwing and sculptural design in Ceramics. Each session will include time for instruction and for practicing new techniques. This class provides students with the basic skills to print and manipulate black-and-white images in the darkroom. Learn how to operate a 35mm camera's settings for greater control, develop film, and print from negatives. This class offers one-on-one darkroom instruction. Work with teacher as you learn to finesse your printing technique. No prior experience necessary.

This is your introduction to a visceral approach to painting through the integration of both instructed and self-discovered methods working non-objectively. Students will merge technical skill and basic knowledge of color, with aesthetic sensibility, instinct and risk; pushing beyond personal boundaries in art making to discover new possibilities. One-on-one instruction as well as group lessons will allow for individual exploration. Relationships between technical skill and personal sensibility, rational decision making vs. intuitive response, and conscious vs. unconscious art making will be addressed. Critiques, discussions, and visual presentations of the work of the modern masters are included. All levels from beginner to advanced.
