Fall 2011 Residency
The Transcontinental Passing of an Ancient Tradition: Pots in America

Winnie Owens-Hart is a renowned ceramics artist with an over three-decade long history of providing individuals with transformational arts experiences. Ms. Owens-Hart has deep connections to Philadelphia, stemming from her undergraduate studies at the University of the Arts. Her reputation and record for providing hands-on, transformational arts experiences to individuals from a range of backgrounds and levels of artistic experience made Ms. Owens-Hart an ideal artist to welcome to Philadelphia!

Ms. Owens-Hart has become a master in her field by learning—first hand—from others who were masters and stewards of the craft, whose intentions were to preserve the craft and history of this art form. Pots in America includes an intensive apprenticeship program, wherein Ms. Owens-Hart will train two artists in the craft and history of Nigerian and Ghanaian pottery making. These artists will continue teaching this amazing art form long after the residency has ended. Learn about the tuition-free class on Traditional Nigerian and Ghanaian Pottery.

Fleisher Art Memorial is partnering with The African American Museum, The Clay Studio, University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, and the University of the Arts to bring traditional Western African ceramics to Philadelphia. Join us at any of the activities listed below! All activities are free unless otherwise noted.
