DECEMBER 2005

  • Fleisher instructor Laura Borneman presents small landscape paintings at SOTA Spirit of the Artist, December 2 through 24, 2005. SOTA is located at 1022 Pine Street, Philadelphia PA.
  • Fleisher instructor Don Kaiser presents Digital Generated Images and Drawings at the Cosmopolitan Club. The Cosmopolitan Club is located at 1616 Latimer Street, Philadelphia PA.
  • Benjamin Long (Challenge artist, 2000-2001) is featured in two exhibitions this month: a solo exhibition of new work at Butters Gallery (Portland OR), December 1 through 23, 2005; and a mini-retrospective of twenty-five works from the past eight years at Rodger LaPelle Galleries (122 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia PA).

NOVEMBER 2005

  • The Fleisher Art Memorial will be featured on KYW-TV 3's weekly public affairs program Eye on Philadelphia on Sunday, November 20, 2005, at 8:30 a.m.
  • Fleisher instructor Alyse C. Bernstein is showing recent prints in InLiquid.com's Exhibit 2 at Painted Bride Art Center Café Gallery, November 4, 2005 through January 15, 2006. Painted Bride Art Center Café Gallery is located at 230 Vine Street, Philadelphia PA.
  • Fleisher instructor Louise Clement-Hoff's oil on canvas diptych A Taste of Bitter Fruit is on view at the University of Beijing, through an exchange with West Chester University.
  • Rebecca Rutstein (Challenge artist, 2002-2003) presents Ebb and Flow, a solo exhibition of her paintings at Bridgette Mayer Gallery, November 2 to 26, 2005. Bridgette Mayer Gallery is located at 709 Walnut Street, Philadelphia PA.

  • Hiro Sakaguchi (Challenge artist, 2004-2005) is featured in Drawing For It 2 at Spector Gallery, November 18 through December 9, 2005. Spector Gallery is located at 510 Bainbridge Street, Philadelphia PA.
  • Several works by Fleisher instructor Charlotte R. Yudis (Challenge artist, 2000-2001) have entered the permanent collection of Johnson & Johnson Pharmaceuticals, Spring House PA.

    Ms. Yudis is also one of four artists to be featured at the grand opening of the Lankenau Institute for Medical Research Art Gallery, November 17, 2005 through January 19, 2006. The Lankenau Institute for Medical Research Art Gallery is located on the ground floor at 100 Lancaster Avenue, Wynnewood PA.

OCTOBER 2005

  • Fleisher instructor Elaine M. Erne is exhibiting in Works on Paper 2005 at the Perkins Center for the Arts, October 2 through 30, 2005. Perkins Center for the Arts is located at 395 Kings Highway, Moorestown NJ.
  • Fleisher instructor Kathryn McFadden presents a solo exhibition Outlooks: Recent Drawings at the Art Gallery of Camden County College (Blackwood NJ), October 13 to November 4, 2005.
  • Fleisher registrar James G. Mundie (Challenge artist, 1999-2000) and instructors Kate Kern Mundie and Nathan Rutkowski are exhibiting works in the 108th Annual Exhibition of the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts at the Plastic Club, October 2 through 28, 2005. James Mundie's Portrait of Frieda Pushnik and a Patron at a Casement received the H. V. Hawley Award for Excellence. The Plastic Club is located at 249 South Camac Street, Philadelphia PA.
  • James G. Mundie is also one of three artists invited to participate in Drawn Inside, an exhibition of drawings curated by John Shipman. The exhibition will be on view in the The Felicity R. "Bebe" Benoliel Gallery of The Center for Emerging Visual Artists, October 27 through November 23, 2005. The Center for Emerging Visual Artists is located at 237 South 18th Street, Suite 3-A, Philadelphia PA.

  • Kate Kern Mundie is also featured — along with fellow instructor Giovanni Casadei — in Living with Art at the Main Line Art Center, October 14 through November 14, 2005. The Main Line Art Center is located at Old Buck Road & Lancaster Avenue, Haverford PA.

SEPTEMBER 2005

  • KYW's Stasia DeMarco produced a podcast on the Fleisher Art Memorial: "The Mission and Programs of the Fleisher Art Memorial".

  • Fleisher instructor Elaine M. Erne has had two works accepted into the Philadelphia Sketch Club's 2005 Juried Printmaking and Drawing Exhibition, September 11 through October 2, 2005. The Philadelphia Sketch Club is located at 235 South Camac Street, Philadelphia PA.

    Ms. Erne is also exhibiting in two exhibtions related the 2005 Philadelphia Open Studios Tours:
    From the Studio 2: Selections from the Philadelphia Open Studio Tours at The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (237 South 18th Street, Suite 3A, Philadelphia PA), September 29 through October 20, 2005; and Across the City Line: POST Preview at Saint Asaph’s Church (27 Conshohocken Road, Bala Cynwyd PA), September 24 through October 16, 2005.

  • Michael Kowbuz (Challenge artist, 1996-1997) is featured in The Los Angeles Printmaking Society's 18th National Exhibition, September 24 through November 20, 2005. The exhibition is located in The Armory Center for the Arts, Pasadena CA.
  • On September 13, the Fleisher Art Memorial and the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission unveiled a new Pennsylvania historical marker honoring the Art Memorial's contribution to the region.

AUGUST 2005

  • Fleisher instructor Kate Kern Mundie presents a solo exhibition of recent oil paintings and pastel drawings entitled Land and Sea at the Ocean City Arts Center from August 3 through 29, 2005. The Ocean City Arts Center is located at 1735 Simpson Avenue, Ocean City NJ. [more info]
  • Fleisher's associate director Nancy W. Wright’s mixed media sculpture Packing for Germantown will be exhibited in the Philadelphia Sculptors' A Case for Art: A Citywide Exhibition of Art Cases, with a special preview to be held August 10 through 24 at the Highwire Gallery. Afterwards the individual works will be displayed at different sites throughout Philadelphia until November 6. The exhibition will conclude with a final display and auction at Old City’s Wexler Gallery on November 12, 2005.
  • Fleisher instructor Charlotte R. Yudis (Challenge artist, 2000-2001) presents a solo exhibition of new prints called Meta/Physical at Gallery Siano, August 26 through September 25, 2005. Gallery Siano is located at 309 Arch Street, Philadelphia PA.

    In other news, Ms. Yudis has been invited to join the Board of Governors of The Print Center.

JULY 2005

  • Rita Bernstein (Challenge artist, 2001-2002) has been awarded a 2005 Independence Foundation Fellowship. Ms. Bernstein will use the fellowship period to photographically document day to day life at Philadelphia's Girard College.
  • Fleisher welcomes Magda Martinez as the new director of our Community Partnerships in the Arts program. Magda previously served as the Arts Team Coodinator for the Southeast Philadelphia Collaborative.
  • Fleisher registrar and instructor James G. Mundie (Challenge artist, 1999-2000) has six drawings included in Step Right Up! Sideshow Wonders and Human Curiosities at Orange Hill Art, July 28 through September 1, 2005. Orange Hill Art is located at 331 Elizabeth Street NE, Suite C, Atlanta GA. [more info]

JUNE 2005

  • Fleisher instructor and exhibition curator Warren Angle (Challenge artist, 1983-1984) is among five artists invited to participate in Inside/Outside: Passages at the Abington Art Center Sculpture Park, June 5 through November 23, 2005. In addition to his outdoor site-specific installation, La Brea, Angle will have work in The Abington Art Center's indoor gallery starting September 23. The Abington Art Center is located at 515 Meetinghouse Road, Jenkintown PA.
  • Fleisher instructor Elaine M. Erne is exhibiting in The Print Show at the Maryland Federation of Art, June 23 through July 8, 2005. The Federation is located at 330 North Charles Street, Baltimore MD.

    Ms. Erne is also part of the 77th Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Art Association of Harrisburg, May 13 through June 16. The Art Association is located at 21 North Front Street, Harrisburg PA.

  • On June 17 the Fleisher Art Memorial announced that the design Mei-Ling Hom (Challenge artist, 1991-1992) proposed for Fleisher's Women's Walkway project has been selected for implementation.   • Michael Kowbuz (Challenge artist, 1996-1997) is exhibiting work in two shows in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania: 77th Annual National Juried Exhibition at the Art Association of Harrisburg and Art of the State 2005: 38th Annual Juried Exhibition at The State Museum of Pennsylvania, June 18 through September 11, 2005.
  • Diane Pieri (Challenge artist, 1978-1979) presents a solo exhibition of twenty-five gouache paintings, Sightseeeing at Mount Meru, at Rosenfeld Gallery, June 5 through 26, 2005. Rosenfeld Gallery is located at 113 Arch Street, Philadelphia PA.
  • On June 20th, Fleisher welcomed aboard Meg Wise as Director of Development, the first such position in Fleisher’s history. Ms. Wise comes to Fleisher with an impressive background in fundraising and education, having served most recently at the Philadelphia Education Fund as Director of Philadelphia Scholars and Civic Engagement. From 2000 to 2004, Wise headed the Donor Services department at The Philadelphia Foundation where she coordinated education and outreach programs for donors and helped increase gifts from existing donors. She started in the nonprofit field with positions at Community Women’s Education Project and the Committee of Seventy, after earning a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature at the University of Pennsylvania.

MAY 2005

  • Warren Angle is featured in Rearranged/Redefined: Domestic Objects Reconsidered at the Main Line Art Center, May 13 through June 8, 2005. The exhibition, curated by Mary Salvante, features work that uses familiar objects to comment on social themes. The Main Line Art Center is located at Old Buck Road and Lancaster Avenue, Haverford PA.
  • Astrid Bowlby (Challenge artist, 1999-2000) has been named a 2005 Pew Fellow in the Arts for the category of works on paper.
  • The Center for Emerging Visual Artists (formerly Creative Artists Network) has announced the recipients of the first Alumni Travel Awards, all four of whom share an association with the Fleisher Art Memorial:
    Vincent David Feldman (Challenge artist, 2001-2002), Hiro Sakaguchi (Challenge artist, 2004-2005), former faculty member Julia Stratton, and faculty member Nancy M. Sophy.
  • Faculty member Fran Gallun presents New Work: Pastels on Paper at the DaVinci Art Alliance, May 1 through 31, 2005. DaVinci is located at 704 Catharine Street, Philadelphia PA.
  • Benjamin Long (Challenge artist, 2000-2001) presents a solo exhibition of new paintings, Flora, at Rodger LaPelle Galleries, May 4 through 29, 2005. LaPelle is located at 122 North 3rd Street, Philadelphia PA. [more info]
  • On Monday, May 16, Fleisher awarded the 2005 Founder's Award to Frank and Betts Louchheim. In conjunction with the event, Fleisher formally dedicated the newly renovated Frank and Betty Louchheim Lobby in honor of their steadfast support of the institution founded by Frank's great uncle.

    Each year the Founder's Award is presented to individuals who have made significant contributions to expanding people's access to the arts, supporting excellence in artistic expression, and enriching Philadelphia's cultural resources. Frank and Betts Louchheim have worked for access to and understanding of arts education for more than 50 years. As co-trustee of the Samuel S. Fleisher Trust, Frank Louchheim has been instrumental in assuring the long-term financial stability of the Memorial. Betts Louchheim served as the first chair of Fleisher's Education Program Committee, helping to develop the program's first assesment tools for students and a mission for Fleisher's exhibition program.

    In 1990, Frank and Betts established the Dene M. Louchheim Fellowship to award annual grants to faculty members in support of creative development. The Louchheim Fellowship was the first of its kind for a community-based arts organization in the region.

  • Fleisher registrar and instructor James G. Mundie (Challenge artist, 1999-2000) has seventeen drawings featured in Alive Inside: The Lure and Lore of the Sideshow, a Piccolo Spoleto invitational exhibition in Charleston SC, curated by Mark Sloan, curator and director of the William Halsey Gallery of the College of Charleston's School of Art. Alive Inside features work by thirteen contemporary artists in four locations, May 13 through June 15, 2005. [more info]

    James Mundie is also exhibiting four works in The Academy at Penn in the Kroiz Gallery and Architecture Archives at the University of Pennsylvania, April 28 through June 8, 2005. The Kroiz Gallery is located in the lower level of the Fisher Fine Arts Library at 220 South 34th Street, Philadelphia PA.

  • Fleisher instructor and former staff member Kate Kern Mundie is mounting a solo exhibition of oil paintings and pastel drawings entitled En Plein Air at Twenty Two Gallery Café from May 13 through June 9, 2005. Twenty Two is located at 236 South 22nd Street, Philadelphia PA. [more info]
  • Fleisher instructor Geri Harkin Tuckett's The Visit received an excellence award from juror Ashley Peel Pinkham (The Print Center) at the Chester County Art Association's Annual Juried Photography Exhibition.

APRIL 2005

  • On April 21, Fleisher's new elevator accepted its first passengers. Now all five studio levels in Fleisher's Catharine Street facility are fully accesible.

MARCH 2005

  • Fleisher has established the Francis McCarthy Memorial Prize for Life Drawing in honor of long-time Fleisher instructor Francis McCarthy, who passed away on January 31. The Fleisher community is deeply saddened by the loss of this beloved instructor known for his dedication to art education, sensitive criticism, and his personal interest in helping his students to become better artists.

    A memorial service dedicated to this wonderful artist and mentor was held in the Fleisher Sanctuary on March 20, with over 200 friends, colleagues, students and models in attendance to celebrate the joy for life Francis expressed every day through his art. To date, over $8000 has been contributed in McCarthy's memory and will be used to establish the McCarthy Memorial Prize to be awarded each year during the Annual Student Members' Exhibition.

  • Fleisher's newly renovated studios opened to the public on Tuesday, March 8.
  • Lydia Hunn (Challenge artist, 1979-1980) is a exhibiting her site specific installation Fowl Slop Hide in Art in City Hall, March 16 through June 24, 2005.
